Summer Term 2

Welcome back- We hope you have had a restful half term.

This half term we are going to be looking at instructional writing. The children will be reading a range of instructions and will be identifying the different features such as headings, safety notes in a box, different styles of font and bullet points and numbers. The children will then incorporate these into their own work when they write their own set of instructions.
In Maths this half term we will be using written methods to solve multiplication and division problems. We will be estimating answers and using the inverse to check our answers are correct. We will also be rounding numbers to the nearest 100 as well as using compass points and positional language.

In Science this half term we are focusing on what plants need. We will be setting up our own investigations to see how much water a plant needs and how much space a plant needs to grow. We will be writing up these experiments, making predictions and recording our results in different ways.

This half term in Geography we are learning all about America. We will be finding out about the human and physical geography of America by carrying out research on a famous landmark, writing a weather forecast report for a place in America, describing a famous physical feature of America and giving our opinion on where we would like to visit and why.

In Computing we will be learning how to be opinion pollsters. We will be looking at how to create surveys online and will develop appropriate questions linked to our survey topic. We will be looking at the range of answer types the online survey creates and we will be collecting the data found from our survey.

Our DT work will link with our Geography topic as we will be cooking different foods linked to America. We will be learning how to prepare ingredients safely and hygienically and we will be collecting, measuring and mixing ingredients to produce delicious American style pancakes and cookies.

Summer Term 1

Welcome back- We hope you have had a lovely Easter break.

This half term we are going to be looking at action and adventure books written by Enid Blyton. These books are ‘The Mystery of the Secret Room,’ ‘The Mystery of the Missing Necklace’ and ‘The Mystery of the Spiteful Letters’. We will be looking at and evaluating the language within the texts and using the techniques created by the author to write our own mystery stories!
In Maths this half term we will be using written methods to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems. We will also be rounding numbers to the nearest 10 as well as measuring volume and capacity.

In Science this half term we are focusing on parts of a plant. We will be labelling parts of a plant and then finding out about their functions. We will be writing explanations and creating flow charts to show photosynthesis.

This half term in History we are learning all about the local history. We will be finding out about the history of Newcastle and Chopwell. We are going to write a newspaper article of the River Tyne Flood of 1771 and we will also write a diary entry as if we were at an opening of one of the bridges in Newcastle.
In Computing we will be learning how to be communicators. We will be looking at how to send an email and how to be safe when doing so. We will create a PowerPoint presentation explaining safety rules and what happens to an email when it is sent.

Our Art work will link with our History topic as we will be designing and creating a bridge picture using art straws and collage materials. We will sketch our picture before adding our art straws and collaging the background.

Spring Term 2

Welcome back- We hope you have had a restful half term.

This half term’s focus is poetry and we will be looking at lots of different poetry books. We will be looking at the features of different types of poems such as shape poems, acrostic poems, rhyming poems and descriptive poems and will be having a go at writing our own!

In Maths this half term we will be using written methods to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems. We will also be estimating and using the inverse to check answers. We are also going to be working on finding equivalent fractions and finding fractions of amounts.

In Science this half term we are focusing on ‘Animals including Humans’. We will be looking at what a balanced diet is and how much of each food group we need. We will also be finding out about the human skeleton and muscles.

This half term in Geography we are learning all about place knowledge. We will be comparing the North East of England to Rome and to do this we will be finding out about the physical and human characteristics of each place. We will then give our own opinions on these places.

In Computing we will be learning how to become network engineers. We will be looking at how to pass messages across networks and how to test network connections.
Our DT work will link with our Science topic ‘Animals including Humans’. We will be designing and creating our own animal using paper mache along with other materials to create their features.

Spring Term 1

Welcome back- We hope you have had a lovely Christmas.

This half term’s focus is ‘Shakespeare’ and we will be reading three different books taken from the plays he has written. We will be writing our own play scripts and adding in our own stage directions.

In Maths this half term we will be building on our knowledge of number and addition and subtraction. We will be working on solving missing number problems. We will also be looking at 2D and 3D shapes and their properties.

In Science this half term we are focusing on ‘Magnets and Forces’. We will be looking at how strong magnets are and we will be carrying out an investigation to see which materials are magnetic.

This half term in History we are learning all about the Ancient Romans. We will be finding out how the Romans lived and researching their beliefs. We will be finding out about the invasion of Britain and what it would have been like to be a Roman soldier.

In Computing we will be learning how to become presenters. We will be looking at different camera techniques and will be uploading and editing video footage.

Our Art work will link with our English topic ‘Shakespeare.’ We will be looking at art work influenced by Shakespeare’s writing and sketching our own, adding water colour paint and collage materials.
