Summer Term 2

Welcome to the last half term of the summer!

This half term’s focus is food around the world! We are all engaging with delicious instructional recipes as a focus for our reading and writing! Year 4 will be looking into the fantastic country of Spain. We will be licking our lips at the recipes for: churros, Spanish omelette, gazpacho and many more traditional Spanish dishes.

In Maths we will continue to broaden our knowledge on number by adding and subtracting 4 digit numbers using the formal written method where we will also be using inverse operations to check our calculations. We will be focusing on multiplying and dividing 3 digit numbers by a 1-digit number using the formal written method. Another topic we will be engaging with is measurement where we will be measuring and converting different units of measure!

This half term in Science we will continuing our focus on plants, but we will be looking into what plants need to grow and survive. We will be researching into fertilizer for different soils and how this has an effect on the growth of the plants.

In Geography we will be linking our whole school topic of food around the world with our country Spain. We will be focusing and learning about the human and physical features in Spain. Also, we will be locating Spain and the major cities and capital on a map using an atlas. As well as, understanding the location of the equator and hemispheres on a world map.
In computing we will be focusing on the topic ‘We are meteorologist’. We will be looking at different types of weather equipment and how they are important for reading and gathering weather data. Also, we will learn how to input data into a spreadsheet on Microsoft Excel. We will also, understand how to present charts and graphs from the data inputted on excel.

This half term in DT we will link our whole school project of food around the world with DT. We will research into the Spanish culture and think of ideas around making an item to sell at our school fayre. We will also we using the delicious recipes from our English lessons to cook the traditional Spanish dishes to taste the flavours of Spain.

Class 4H are continuing their exciting forest school journey with Mr Marriner in the outdoor classroom!

Summer Term 1

Welcome to the new summer Term!

This half term’s focus is action and adventure with Enid Blyton. We are all engaging with different books written by Enid Blyton. We will be finding out about all of the mysteries and adventure throughout the books. We will be creating mysterious stories, character and setting descriptions. We will even be writing about our own mystery in Chopwell.

In Maths we will continue to broaden our knowledge on number by adding and subtracting 4 digit numbers using the formal written method where we will also be using inverse operations to check our calculations. We will be focusing on multiplying and dividing 3 digit numbers by a 1-digit number using the formal written method. Another topic we will be engaging with is measurement where we will be measuring and converting different units of measure!

This half term in Science we will be focusing on the topic ‘Plants’. We will be identifying the different parts of a plant as well as explaining their different functions. We will be carrying out a celery stick experiment with food colouring to explore how the stick absorbs. The children will also be researching and exploring seed dispersal and how seed disperse to create other plants.

In History we will be investigating the topic ‘Local History’. We will be researching into the local history of Chopwell and the Chopwell Colliery. We will also be researching into the local history of Newcastle and Gateshead. The children will be using Ipads to research as well as sorting timelines to uncover historic events!

In computing we will be focusing on the topic ‘We are co-authors”. We will be creating our own wiki-page. The children will be taught about internet safety. We will be linking our computing to our history topic. The children will create their own wiki-page on the local history of Chopwell with exciting research they have independently found out themselves!

This half term in DT we will link our project with history. The children will research into the local landmarks throughout Newcastle and Gateshead. We will explore the different landmarks in the area for example: The Millennium Bridge, Sage Gateshead and The Angel of the North. We will design our own landmark and then use our design to help us model the landmarks.

Class 4H are starting a new, exciting and adventurous subject with Mr Marriner by attending forest school for 1 hour a week. They will be learning a vast amount of skills outside and will be engaging in many adventurous tasks.

Spring Term 2

This half term’s focus is poetry. We are all engaging with different poetry books written by different authors across the six weeks. We will be looking at different types of poems such as shape poems, acrostic poems, descriptive and rhyming poems. The children will write their own poem each week using descriptive phrases and alliteration to make the poems exciting!
In Maths we will continue to broaden our knowledge on number by ordering and comparing numbers beyond one thousand and round numbers to the nearest ten, hundred or thousand! We will be focussing on fractions and engage with finding fractions of amounts and recognising equivalent fractions. We will also be looking at shape and position and direction on a 2-D grid, using positional language to translate shapes.

This half term in Science we will be focusing on the topic ‘Animals including humans’. We will be researching into what a balanced diet is, comparing it with an unhealthy diet. We will explore the human body and identify the bones and muscles in our bodies.

In Geography we will be focusing on ‘Place Knowledge’. We will be finding out what a region is and we will be exploring the similarities and differences between the North East of England and Sicilia in Italy. We will use atlases and compasses to locate the different regions whilst also researching into the different land marks and geographical features of both regions. We will end our topic with a debate on both regions.

In computing we will be focusing on the topic ‘We are HTML editors’. The children will engage with different websites and learn how to edit different webpages on the internet. We will also be learning the different vocabulary used on the internet which will help us edit the correct parts of the websites.

This half term in DT we will link our project with poetry. The children will create, edit and illustrate their own shape poetry book. We will focus our poetry book on nature and venture outside to use our senses, which will help us create a descriptive shape poem.

Spring Term 1

Welcome back! This half term’s focus is Shakespeare and we have some very exciting activities planned in Year 4.

As the focus is Shakespeare, in English we will be reading “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “Romeo and Juliet” and “Macbeth”. The children will be writing stories, reports and play scripts to link with the stories of Shakespeare. We will be learning the language Shakespeare used and working on out sentence structure in our writing.

In maths we will be building on our number and place value knowledge, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and measure. In measurement we will be focusing on measuring and converting different units of measure along with measuring perimeter and area of rectilinear shapes. We will also be exploring shapes and angles, ensuring we can compare and classify different angles and shapes

In cience this half term we will be learning about Forces and Magnets. The children will be researching and investigating different forces and how magnets can attract different materials. We will be planning and writing our investigations, describing what we have done and the results we have found in the investigation.

In computing the children will become digital musicians. The children will research into the different genres of music and listen to the difference between real instruments and digital sound. We will be using the software Audacity to produce our own music.

Our topic in history this half term is the Roman Empire. We will be researching into where and when the Roman Empire began. We will also be researching and learning about Julius Caeser and the invasions on Britain. The children will be finding out about the Roman soldiers within the Roman Army which we are very excited about!

In art we are going to be researching more into the Romans and explore their artwork. We will be looking at the mosaics created and create our very own mosaic picture for our art portfolio.
