Home Learning Tasks - W.B 13.7.20 Summer themed activities

For this week I have added some summer activities for you to have a go at!

Home Learning Tasks - Friday 10th July

English Task

Today I would like you to practice your handwriting. Choose some letters that you find tricky to form such as e, g,k,d,b and s. Can you practice forming them correctly.

Maths Task

RWI/Reading

Speed sound lessons are available on the following you tube channel. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ

After speed sound lesson.....

Practice speedy green words at the back of the book with your child. You sound out the word e.g. f-r-o-g and say frog, your child copies, do this for every word.  Then swap over so your child is the 'teacher'. Repeat for sounds, story green words and red words (page 4,5,6,7). N.B just read each red word and get your child to copy, you do not need to sound them out.  Your child should now be becoming more confident as they have been practicing the same words for a number of days - they may just be able to read the words without sounding them out. This is great as it is developing their fluency! Get your child to read the whole book to you!

Then....

Turn to the back cover of the story book - Questions to talk about. Give children the page number and give them time to find the page then ask them the questions. For 'FF' this stands for (fastest finger) your child has to find the answer and point and then tell you the answer. For have a think give your child time to think about the answer before answering- this is helping them to develop their comprehension skills.

Topic activities (W.B 1.6.20)

Music Task Using pots, pans and baking trays from the kitchen lay out your own ‘drum kit’. Allow your child to explore by banging and tapping the pans to see the different sounds they make. Extend this activity by tapping out a rhythm and asking your child to listen to it then repeat it. You could make this more difficult by adding in a blindfold so they have to rely on the sound to identify which pot or pan they need to hit to copy.

The change that Covid-19 has caused to our lives has been difficult and has provided countless challenges. For many children, the uncertainty and disruption to everyday life has caused worry and anxiety. These tasks are designed to help children process the current situation, begin to make sense of it and plan for returning to a different normal.

Think

  • Ask your child to think about how they are feeling about returning to being at school, whenever that may be! Can they list two or three feelings? Explain to your child that it is okay to feel like this and many children across the world are most likely feeling the same. Your child could draw a heart or a rainbow for other children and list kind words for them.

Talk

  • Does your child have any questions about what school will be like when they eventually return?  Discuss the changes that will be in place when they return e.g. more handwashing, how to social distance, etc. Then talk about all of the things that will remain the same e.g. wearing the same uniform etc.

Do

  • The thought of returning to school will fill many children with a mixture of excitement and apprehension. Why not make a positivity box? Your child could add items to this box that make them feel safe and provide comfort. When they are feeling apprehensive, they could choose an item from the box to hold and think about a time when they felt calm.

-Begin making your own dairy  – Write about what they have done today, adult to emphasis the days of the week, you could use the days of the week song on white rose maths to help. keep adding to this and keep it in a safe place one day Coronavirus will be taught in history!

- Try making your own story map or story book about the hungry caterpillar. A story map involves drawing pictures of the main events in the story so that you can retell it.

- The following link is to a video clip of the life cycle of a butterfly! It really is fascinating to watch! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jivWeOrCaeI

-Try doing some fruit and veg printing - cut the fruit/veg in half, cover them with paint and do some printing. What shapes can you see? Can you make a pattern? (peppers, potatoes, onions, apples and oranges work particularly well!)

- Try making a symmetrical butterfly. Add some different coloured paint spots to your paper then fold it in half and rub the paper to spread the paint. Open it out to see the beautiful patterns and then cut out a butterfly shape!

Home Learning Tasks - Friday 1st May

English Task

Today children will be doing some writing based around the following picture. https://www.pobble365.com/an-unexpected-adventure/.

Discuss the picture first with your child (it is a very unusual one today). Where might the girl be going? How do you think she is feeling? What can she see? Then get your child to write about it- encouraging use of capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. Get children to use their phonic knowledge to have a go at writing words- remember their spelling doesn't have to be correct when writing more complex words, it is about them being able to break the sounds down in the words.

Maths Task

Click the following link for today's maths task. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/

Today you will be working out if the pirate's counting is 'trash' or 'treasure'. There is also a lovely shape song for you to have a go at!

Weekly Topic work (W.B 27th April 2020)

The topic  this week aims to provide opportunities for your child to learn more about their home!

  • The rooms in my house-
    • Support your child to create a map  of their home. Can they name all of the rooms? An adult could hide an object in a room and mark where it is on the child’s map. Can they use their map to find the hidden object? Label each room using phonics knowledge.
    • Gather an object from each room and challenge your child to return them to the appropriate room e.g. toothbrush from the bathroom, teddy from their bedroom.
    • Hide objects around the room and describe where it is e.g. “it’s under something red” Can your child hide an object and describe where it is for you to find?
  • Go on a numeral hunt-
    • Search for numerals around the house (clocks, books, house numbers, car registrations, oven, washing machine). Can they record the numerals on paper?
  • Find your house on google maps- (Children LOVE doing this at school!)
    • Explore using google maps to look at your house from above and on street view. Use the arrows to move up and down the road and around your area. Can they find key places e.g. the corner shop, their school, grandparents houses.
    • Search for a house in a different part of the world and discuss how it is similar or different to your own. You could use places children have visited on holiday or search places that are significantly different.
  • Junk model your house-
    • Using old packaging (shoe box, cereal box etc.) support your child to make a model of your house. Can they count how many windows there are and stick on the right amount? Can they write their house number on the front?
    • Junk model your dream house. Use materials from around your house to decorate e.g. old wallpaper, fabric, wool.
  • Use construction blocks to build your house-
    • Using lego, duplo, wooden blocks make a model of your house. Can they add in the rooms and doors in the right places? Write labels to match each room on pieces of paper.
    • Build your dream house out of construction blocks.
  • Create a furniture collage-
    • Using old magazines and catalogues support your child to cut out and stick or sort objects into the room they would belong in. Support your child to use correct scissor grip.
  • Exploring with your senses-
    • Gather a collection of household objects e.g. fork, cup, toothbrush, teddy bear, book and show your child. Use a scarf/ material as a blindfold and pass your child one of the objects. Can they figure out what it is through touch alone? Give clues if they are struggling. Swap roles and ask your child to give you an object to figure out.
    • Explore the textures around your house. Can children find something rough, smooth, bumpy. They could take a wax rubbing of each texture (Lay a piece of paper over the top and rub over with the side of a crayon). You could continue this into the garden.

  • Look at a selection of family photographs and discuss the changes over time. Show your child a photograph of them as a baby, a 1-year-old, a 2-year-old. What could they do at that age? What can they do now that they couldn’t do then? Look at a picture of a family member as a baby (this could be parents, siblings). Discuss how everyone was a baby once. Are there any black and white photographs? Why are these photographs black and white? Do they show older family members when they were younger? Talk about how life was different then.

  • Draw a family tree- How does your family link together? Can your child draw out their family members and link them together using lines?

  • Do a picture survey of the people in your house. How many family members have blonde/ brown/ black/ red hair? Can you record this with pictures? How many people have blue/ brown/ green eyes?

  • Have a family picnic. Lay out a blanket in the living room or garden. Can children make sure everyone has a plate, fork, spoon, cup? How many do we need all together? Give your child a selection of food and ask them to share it fairly between everyone? If there is one left over what could we do?

  • Sort out the clean clothes. Who do they belong to? Can they deliver them to the right place in the house? Pair up socks. Can they match the patterns/ colours? Can they count in twos to work out how many there are all together? Peg clothes on the airer (this will support children to develop hand strength which will impact on their writing).

  • Lay the table for your family for dinner- How many people are there? How many knives, forks, cups do you need? Write out name cards for everyone in your family to show them where to sit. Write a menu to let them know what is for dinner that night. Roleplay as a waiter/ waitress. What would everyone like in their sandwiches for lunch? What drinks would everyone like to have with their dinner?

  • Make a birthday card for the next family birthday-  How old are they going to be? Can they write the numerals to show the correct age? Write a message inside for your family member and sign it with your name.

  • What jobs do the people in your family do? Talk to your child about your job and what you do. What would they like to be when they grow up? Can they draw a picture of themselves in the job they would like to do?

  • Use play dough to make your family members- Use ready made play dough or make your own using this recipe:
    • 2 cups of plain flour, one cup of salt, a tablespoon of oil, a cup of water (add gradually), a couple of drops of food colouring (optional), a teaspoon of cream of tartar (optional, but will make it last longer)
    •
  • Play a family board game- Play a game together. Talk about taking it in turns and playing fairly. Dice games will support your child’s number recognition. You could use a spinner with numerals on to help develop numeral recognition. If you don’t have a spinner you could make one using an old cereal box and a split pin.

  • Find out everyone’s favourite song in your family- Listen to each person’s favourite song and make up a dance to match. Do you like the same music? What is your favourite song?

Easter Holidays

Another great week of home learning has come to an end! We just wanted to say .....

Thank you for all of the updates on Evidence Me, and for all of the messages and support you have shown on our Facebook home learning page! We have loved seeing what the children have been up to and how they are getting on at home! We miss them all so much! You've been amazing during this extremely difficult time! Thank you!

I won't be uploading any work over the Easter holidays, but will start again on Monday 20th April. I have however, added a few Easter themed crafts and activities that might help to keep your little ones busy! Please continue to read lots of stories with your children and keep practicing their RWI green words and sounds. Most of all have lots of fun together and make the most out of this incredibly difficult time! Thanks again for your continued support!

Easter Activity Ideas

-Make some Easter treats. You could make cakes or biscuits and decorate them too!

- Have an Easter egg hunt! Ask a grown up to hide some Easter eggs for you to find. How many eggs can you find? (White Rose Maths have some lovely ideas for an Easter egg hunt with a maths focus! Click the following link and then choose week 1 home learning  https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/

-Try some planting activities. You could plant some seeds in a flowerpot filled with soil. Make sure you give them some water and put them somewhere sunny.

- Decorate some hard boiled eggs, to make them bright and colourful. You could use pens or paint and add some extra decorations such as stickers, feathers, pom poms or googly eyes.

- Make an Easter basket to keep your Easter eggs safe. You could use empty cardboard boxes and add some decorations too.

Home Learning Tasks - Friday 3rd April 2020

English Task

Practice reading the alien words using Fred Talk (Day 10 in home learning book). Get your child to draw their own alien and make up their own alien word!

Maths Task

Children to name 3D shapes (Day 10 in home learning booklet). Get children to count how many of each shape they can see.

Then practice numbers 0-20 with your child. You could hide them around the house/garden for your children to find and order or you could do them as number flashcards - show the children the numbers out of order and get children to say the number and then order them.

RWI/Reading

Please follow this link for a virtual daily speed sound lesson for your child to take part in.  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ

Please see slip enclosed in your child's home learning pack this will inform you of what set speed sounds they are currently learning.

There is a slight change- due to demand the videos will be available to view for 24 hours (until the following days session is streamed).

  • Set 1 speed Sounds at 9:30am and again at 12:30pm
  • Set 2 Speed Sounds at 10:00am and again at 1:00pm
  • Set 3 Speed Sounds at 10:30am and again at 1:30pm

Then.....

If your child is not yet onto reading books please practice green words 1.1-1.5 encourage children to Fred talk e.g. s-a-t and then say sat and also practice speed sound flashcards.

As children are in different coloured groups for Read, Write Inc and therefore are reading different books.  Please see below for the book your child will be working on this week.

Home Learning Tasks - Tuesday 30th March 2020

English Task

Children should all be familiar with the story of Hansel and Gretel. Get your child to look at the picture of the cottage made from sweets in their home learning book. Can your child write about the house? Encourage your children to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops at the end of the sentence.

Maths Task

Focus on Week 2 Day 2 on white rose website.  https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/

Today's task involves making ladybird biscuits (on the website it also gives alternatives so see what you have in your cupboards) Utimately the children are going to be learning how to double numbers! E.g. make ladybird biscuits and put 2 spots on one side get your child to put the same number of spots on the other side "How many all together?" Adult to model language "yes double 2 equals 4".

Don't worry if you do not have the ingredients in to make biscuits! (See day 6 maths task in home learning booklets instead). It is gingerbread man doubling today! I have left them blank so that children can see you drawing the sweeties on (can just use spots). E.g. for double 3. You draw 3 spots and get your child to draw 3 spots - get your child to count to see how many there is all together. Adult to model language "double 3 equals 6" etc.  Put emphasis on the fact that double means adding the same number again. Get your child to write the answer.

Makaton Signing

Our class love learning new makaton signs and we have been learning at least one new sign each week since we started in September, this is helping all children in our class communicate, and all the children love it! I thought it would be a real shame for children to miss out while not attending school so thought I would share some links to things your child might like to do at home! Please remember the importance of using vocabulary alongside signing to encourage children to use their voice.

https://www.youtube.com/user/SingingHandsUK   (This is a great you tube channel and has lots of topic based makaton signing e.g. wild animals, farm animals as well as lots of makaton signed stories and songs)

https://wetalkmakaton.org/    Follow this link to find out the sign of the week.

Topic Ideas - Week Beginning 30th March 2020.

Either in your garden or on your daily walk have a look for some minibeasts. What can you find and where are they living? Maybe you could make your own minibeast habitat in your garden.
