Year 5 Miss Byrne

Autumn 2

This term we have been exploring the topic Victorians. Take a look at some of the things we have covered this half term!

We are Chopwell Champions! Recently, we attended a Yr5/6 Mini Basketball Tournament at Thorp, we did amazingly and have qualified through to the next round! Keep a look out for further updates on our next tournament to see if we can make it through the semi-finals and which school will win the cup...

NO Pen's Day

No Pens? No Problem! Having no pens doesn't stop us from doing work and having fun! We have been learning how to convert improper fraction into mixed numbers so, we put our learning to the test and played a (very competitive) game of dominoes! We also had a go at Connect 4!

We had a great time visiting Chopwell Library. We took part in a group rhyming challenge about spiders, ghosts and cats, listened to some awful Halloween dad jokes (there was a lot of head shaking in disbelief), had some free time exploring the shelves for a new book to lend, before finally doing an emoji quiz.

We have been looking into the nitty gritty process of video production. We have evaluated music videos, explored how lighting, angles and motion angles can all change a shot, and focus points for depending on what you want the shot to focus on.

Autumn 1

This term in Year 5 our topic is 'Blue Planet'. Take a look at some of the things we have been up too this term so far;

Digging through Flotsam

In English we have been rewriting a narrative from the picture book "Flotsam". As an introductory task, the children were introduced to beachcombing and what flotsam is. They were given a lesson to beachcomb through some flotsam trays and asked to try to match the flotsam tray to a suspect in the line up. They had to conclude as a group why they chose that suspect based on their findings and clues.

Paper Databases

In computing, we are learning all about databases. The children were asked to create paper animal databases and tick the correct fields that applied to their chosen animal, for example; has 6 legs, can fly, lives in large group. Then the children were asked to sort them out alphabetically, reverse alphabetically and into fields. The children then merged their databases in groups and got rid of any duplicates and repeated the sorting exercises to see which group could get the fastest time!

Year 5 Mini-Police

Our Year 5 Mini-Police have been chosen! Keep a look out for Chopwell's Mini-Police out patrolling the streets in the community! Over the year they will have exciting experiences to encounter such as; meeting the K-9's, a visit to the Marine Centre, litter-picking and evening zapping some speeding cars.

Year 5 had the chance to dive into cooking with Hannah from Pickle Palace in one of our parent workshops! They had so much fun making a selection of treats including spicy samosas and delicious apple crumble!
