Accelerated Reader - children can read and quiz at  home using this link:  https://ukhosted90.renlearn.co.uk/2244910/default.aspx

Welcome back

This half term we will be exploring where we live. We will be looking at the different features of Chopwell and what makes it a good place to live. We will go on a local walk to explore what Chopwell has to offer the community and then we will compare living in a village to a busy city centre like Newcastle.

We will also be experimenting with different materials and deciding why certain materials are used to make particular objects.

Our PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday - please make sure your child has their PE kit including PE shoes.

This year the children will be doing accelerated reader which means they need to bring the book bags everyday to read.

Local walk

As part of our topic 'Where do I live?' we went on a local walk to discover the geographical features of Chopwell.

We went in small groups and look at both human and physical features of Chopwell. One group was even lucky enough to go into the dog grooming shop.

We found that we have quite a lot to offer in our village, there are shops, a fire station, a library, hairdressers, a community centre, a gym and lots more. We also found that there are lots of open spaces for children like parks and the woods.

Materials investigation

As part of our science topic 'Materials' we have been investigating the different properties of materials.

One experiment was to find the best material to soak up Grandma's spills as she keeps spilling the water when she fills her vase for the flowers.

We learnt the word 'absorb' and then we tested different materials to see which worked best.

Materials Investigation

We have had fun learning to programme the Bee Bots to travel around the treasure maps. Sometimes we reached the treasure but sometimes we ended up in the sea!

Remembrance Day

As part of our history topic we walked up to the War Memorial in Chopwell to see what information we could find out. We looked at the Poppy wreaths and talked about why the memorial is there.

Colour mixing

Coding Workshop

We went to the Metrocentre for a coding workshop at the Apple Store. First we met the Sphero Robots, then we began to learn how to programme them. We had a simple maze to porgramme the robot along. It was quite tricky and we had to keep starting again when the robot went wrong. In the end some of manged to programme the robot to the end of the maze and some children even manged to programme the robot over a ramp.

It was a great morning and everyone had so much fun.

Coding Workshop at The Apple Store

Kandinsky Art

Following on from our colour mixing we began to look at how to make colours lighter and darker. We looked at Kandinsky and how he used colours and shapes in his work.

We then used one colour to create different shades both lighter and darker in the style of Kandinsky.
