PE in Year 2

 

In Chopwell Primary School the children in Year 2 will explore…

 

1. Tennis

In this unit, children will develop fundamental tennis skills, including basic strokes such as forehand, backhand, and serving. They will understand and apply basic rules and strategies of the game, enhancing their physical fitness and hand-eye coordination through regular practice and participation. Additionally, children will learn to work collaboratively with peers, fostering communication and cooperation. The unit aims to build confidence and resilience by engaging in both competitive and non-competitive games. Key skills covered include forehand and backhand strokes, serving techniques, rallying, court positioning, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Children will be able to:

· To serve a ball accurately.

· To move around with the ball using your hands keeping it under control.

· To be able to hit the ball over a net/line.

· To hit the tennis ball with a racket to a partner correctly .

·  Perform a forehand stroke with some accuracy.

· Perform a back hand stroke with some accuracy.

 

2. Gymnastics

In this unit children investigate movement, stillness, and how to find and use space safely. They explore basic gymnastic actions on the floor and using apparatus. They copy or create, remember and repeat, short movement phrases of ‘like’ linked actions e.g. two jumps, or two rolls. In gymnastics as a whole, children use skills and agilities individually, in combination and sequence, with the aim of showing as much control and precision as possible.

Children will be able to:

· Be able to work individually and as a team.

· Perform different types of rolls including; forwards, teddy bear, roly poly.

· Continue to perform different types of jumps including pencil jump and tuck jump.

· Continue to be able to use different apparatus to perform a   sequence.

· Be able to create a sequence using a  combination of elements.

 

3. Football

In this unit, children will develop fundamental football skills, including dribbling, passing, and shooting. They will understand and apply basic rules of the game, enhancing their physical fitness and teamwork through regular practice and participation. Additionally, children will learn to work collaboratively with peers, fostering communication and cooperation. The unit aims to build confidence and resilience by engaging in both competitive and non-competitive games. Key skills covered include dribbling techniques, accurate passing, effective shooting, basic defending, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Children will be able to:

· Be able to communicate effectively.

· Dribble with the ball.

· Turn with a moving ball.

· Become familiar with some of the key rules of the game such as free kick, corner, hand ball, foul.

· Effectively take a corner kick.

· Exploring goal shooting and placing the ball

· Tackling another player.

 

4. Multi-skills

In this unit, children will develop a range of fundamental physical skills, including running, jumping, throwing, and catching. They will understand and apply basic techniques across various activities, enhancing their physical fitness and coordination through regular practice and participation. Additionally, children will learn to work collaboratively with peers, fostering communication and cooperation. The unit aims to build confidence and resilience by engaging in both individual and group activities. Key skills covered include running techniques, jumping and landing safely, throwing and catching accurately, balance and coordination, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Children will be able to:

· Stay physically active for sustained periods of time.

· Move with ease, poise and stability.

· Continue to develop skills for attacking and defending.

· Become increasingly confident to access a range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination.

· Master basic movements such as; running, jumping, coordination, throwing and catching and agility.

 

5. Dance

In this unit, children will explore and develop fundamental dance skills, including rhythm, coordination, and expressive movement. They will understand and apply basic dance techniques and sequences, enhancing their physical fitness and creativity through regular practice. Additionally, children will learn to work collaboratively with peers, fostering communication and cooperation. The unit aims to build confidence and self-expression by participating in both individual and group dance activities. Key skills covered include rhythm and timing, body control and coordination, creative expression, teamwork, and performance skills.

Children will be able to:

· Execute simple dance steps and movements with control and coordination.

· Move in time with music or a beat, demonstrating an understanding of rhythm and timing.

· Combine movements to create short dance routines.

· Use body movements to express emotions and ideas.

· Show improved balance, coordination, and body awareness during dance activities.

· Engage in dance activities with confidence and enthusiasm.

 

6. Athletics

In this unit children should learn to apply basic athletic skills and techniques to a range of activities. These skills include jumping, hopping, balancing with control, running with control and co-ordination and throwing towards a target. Children explore and develop their locomotor, stability and manipulation skills.

Children will be able to:

· Explore simple skills and techniques of running, jumping and throwing.

· Run with control at different speeds.

· Experience competition against self and others.

· Explore the changes that happen to the body during different types of athletic activities.

· Explore how to exercise safely.

 

Fitness 

We as a whole school are implementing a fitness PE lesson once a week to encourage the children to maintain a healthy active lifestyle. Holding themselves accountable for their achievements and following their personal progress as they develop their fitness and cardiovascular health throughout their school life.
