In Chopwell Primary School the children in Year 4 will explore…
1. Netball
In this unit, children will develop their understanding and skills in netball, following the UK National Curriculum guidelines. They will learn key skills such as passing, catching, and footwork, as well as the importance of teamwork and communication on the court. Through a series of engaging activities and drills, students will practice accurate passing techniques, improve their hand-eye coordination, and understand the rules and positions in netball. By the end of the unit, children will be able to demonstrate improved agility, spatial awareness, and strategic thinking, enabling them to participate confidently in netball games.
Children will be able to:
·Perform a chest pass
· Perform a pivot and understand the footwork rule.
· Understand how to mark accurately.
· Develop a dodging technique.
· Develop a shooting technique.
· Understand the importance of using space in a game situation.
· Be able to play as part of a team in a netball.
2. Athletics
In this unit, children will develop their athletic skills through a variety of activities that promote physical fitness, coordination, and teamwork. They will learn key skills such as running, jumping, and throwing, focusing on techniques to improve their speed, agility, and strength. Children will also engage in activities that enhance their understanding of fair play, perseverance, and goal-setting. By the end of the unit, they will be able to demonstrate improved performance in individual and team events, understand the importance of warm-ups and cool-downs, and reflect on their personal progress and achievements.
Children will be able to:
· Develop awareness of time, distance & speed.
· Develop fluency & rhythm in their movements.
· Develop spatial awareness and judge height & distance.
· Choose & apply appropriate stride patterns.
· Learn how to send an object safely with a greater force and accuracy.
· Use different throwing techniques.
· Learn to take off and land in a fluent & coordinated way.
· Develop body position in flight.
· Use a variety of jumps in different games & activities.
3. Dance
In this unit, children will explore various dance styles and techniques, enhancing their physical coordination, rhythm, and expressive abilities. They will learn key skills such as creating and performing dance sequences, understanding musicality, and using space effectively. Children will also develop their ability to work collaboratively, respond to feedback, and appreciate different cultural dance forms. By the end of the unit, they will be able to choreograph and perform short dance routines, demonstrate improved balance and control, and reflect on their creative process and personal growth.
Children will be able to:
· Understand strengths and weaknesses in others’ performances.
· Understand how different compositional devices affect performance.
· Use a number of dance actions to create a fluent performance.
· Work effectively within a group dance.
· Able to demonstrate relationships - mirroring.
· Be able to use correct expressions to portray the style of dance.
4. Gymnastics
In this unit, children will enhance their physical abilities through a range of gymnastics activities that promote strength, flexibility, and balance. They will learn key skills such as rolling, jumping, balancing, and sequencing movements, focusing on techniques to improve their control and precision. Children will also develop their ability to work safely, both individually and in groups, and understand the importance of body awareness and posture. By the end of the unit, they will be able to perform simple gymnastic routines, demonstrate improved coordination and confidence, and reflect on their progress and achievements.
Children will be able to:
· Use compositional devices when creating sequences, such as changes in speed, level and direction.
· To accelerate and decelerate whilst travelling.
· Perform a roll using control, body tension and flow.
· Continuously repeat a short sequence and turn into a routine.
· Create a performance that consists of at least 6 elements.
· Practice and refine their performance.
· Use equipment within a sequence.
5. Cricket
In this unit, children will develop their cricket skills through a variety of activities that promote physical fitness, teamwork, and strategic thinking. They will learn key skills such as batting, bowling, fielding, and catching, focusing on techniques to improve their accuracy, coordination, and agility. Children will also enhance their understanding of game rules, fair play, and sportsmanship. By the end of the unit, they will be able to participate confidently in small-sided games, demonstrate improved tactical awareness, and reflect on their individual and team performance.
Children will be able to:
· Understand key terms such as wicket and stump.
· Develop underarm bowling accuracy.
· Develop overarm throwing technique.
· Develop batting accuracy and directional batting.
· Develop deep fielding catching.
· Develop a variety of fielding techniques and use them in a game.
6. Football
In this unit, children will develop their football skills through engaging activities that promote physical fitness, teamwork, and strategic thinking. They will learn key skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and defending, focusing on techniques to improve their control, accuracy, and coordination. Children will also enhance their understanding of game rules, fair play, and sportsmanship. By the end of the unit, they will be able to participate confidently in small-sided games, demonstrate improved tactical awareness, and reflect on their individual and team performance.
Children will be able to:
· Continue to be able to communicate effectively.
· Volley the ball.
· Learn how to man mark and zonal mark.
· Continue to participate in team games.
· Play in competitive games.
· Become familiar with most of the key rules of the game such as free kick, corner, hand ball, foul, advantage and the card system.
Fitness
We as a whole school are implementing a fitness PE lesson once a week to encourage the children to maintain a healthy active lifestyle. Holding themselves accountable for their achievements and following their personal progress as they develop their fitness and cardiovascular health throughout their school life.
