Year 5 Miss Hillary & Miss Grey

Good morning,

Everyday we will upload Maths and English work for the children to complete in the exercise books provided last week. In addition to this, we will also set a topic research project for the children to complete across the week. When children return to school, all completed work should be sent back into school with them so that we can assess what your child has been able to achieve. Furthermore, your child can access 'Timestables Rockstars' and 'Spelling Shed' (where their weekly spellings will be uploaded) on any device with internet. Children should continue to read their book (either school book or book from home) for at least 20 minutes per day.

Any queries you may have over the work your child has been set, please use the 'Chopwell Year 5 Home Learning' page on Facebook. This page will be monitored from 9am-3pm.

Thank you

Miss Hillary, Miss Grey and Mrs Curry

16.07.2020

Today we would like you to create a 'survival kit' for the year 4s coming up to year 5. You could include what they need to know, what year 5 is like and your top tips.

We hope you have a lovely summer! See you in September

Miss Hillary, Miss Grey and Mrs Curry

15.7.20

Today we want you to write about your favourite memory in Y5. This could be: a lesson or activity you really loved, an event you took part in, a themed day in school or just a day where you generally felt really good. You should include:

- What happened in your memory in detail.

- Who was there.

- When it happened.

- Where is happened.
- Why it was your favourite day.
- How you felt using show not tell me sentences.

13.7.20

We want you to write a letter to your teacher next year to tell them a little bit about yourself. You could include:

- Your goals for Y6.

- What your likes/dislikes are.

- What you are looking forward to in Y6.

- What you are anxious about in Y6.

- What you think your strengths are.

- What you think you might need help with.

Virtual sports day

Challenge yourself to complete these ten activities over the course of today and ask an adult share pictures and videos with your friends on the Facebook group! You will need someone to time your activities. Who will be able to meet all of the challenges?! Good luck!

1. How long can you balance on one leg blindfolded?

2. How long can you hold the plank for?

3. How long can you can you balance some books on your head before they fall off? Make it harder by standing on one leg! How many books can you balance?!

Balance some books on your head, how far can you walk without them falling off? Make it harder by creating an obstacle course to move round!

4. How many star jumps/burpees can you do in one minute?

5. How many times can you stand up and sit down on a chair in one minute? This will test your leg strength! Want more of a challenge?!? Try this on only one leg!
Bronze = 30 or more

Silver= 50 or more

Gold=60 or more

6. Not quite an egg and spoon race! Ask your adult for what you can use. How many laps of your living room/garden can you do without dropping your egg? You could use your obstacle course from activity 3 to make it harder!

7. How many times can you bounce a ball off a tennis racket without dropping it? You could use a pan and rolled up socks if you don’t have the equipment! Can you flip the racquet round each time you bounce for even more of a challenge?!

8. How many times can you clap between throwing a ball in the air and catching it again? Challenge- clap a rhythm in between catches!

9. How many keepy ups can you do in one minute?

10. Place a cereal box on the floor, how many times can you jump over it in one minute? Don’t squash the box!

Daily PE lessons delivered by Joe Wicks to keep the children active.

Hello and welcome back! We hope you have all had a restful half term. Miss Grey, Miss Hillary and Mrs Curry have lots of fun and exciting learning opportunities planned for the children for this half term.

This half term the children will be working on the topic 'Journey to the Core' and will be reading 'The Matchbox Diary'. We will be looking at a diary-in-objects kept by a character from the story to recount his journey from Italy to America. We will also be thinking of memories that are important to us and objects which we hold close to us.

PE days this half term are Monday and Wednesday - can children make sure they have PE kits on these days.

The children had a great time at Washington Fire Station on Friday. They learnt a lot about deliberate fires and fire safety.

The children in Y5 have had a great morning learning to code and make music on the computers. They have played the tune of 'Hot Cross Buns' and 'Mary had a Little Lamb' using an interactive piano and a microbit.

Y5 loved their session yesterday during Gymnastics Day! They learnt lots of new balances, ways of travelling and even put together their own routine with a partner.

Year 5 have been learning about Earth and Space this half term. Today we learned about the phases of the moon and we used Oreos to represent each phase.

The children had a great time with Richard from Cycling Generation this morning learning all about the effect exercise has on their heart rate. The children had a boy vs girl race on the bike which measured how many meters they would have traveled. The girls won!

The children have been watching the short film 'Little Freak' in English this week and are writing a character description of Little Freak. The child worked in groups to describe his appearance, behaviour and how he speaks.

This week we have been writing a radio advert trying to persuade the listener to try our new drink - 'Sploosh!' Miss Hillary and Miss Grey made us some to try. Some of us weren't sure at first but some of us loved it!

The children took on the role of Stanley Yelnats from the book 'Holes'. They experienced digging holes to see how it felt - some of us were very tired!

The children worked hard today during our 'sticky note' lesson. The children had to work in pairs to solve the bronze, silver and gold subtraction problems!

The children loved watching the Tour of Britain race through the streets of Chopwell! They designed signs and cheered the riders on.
