In Chopwell Primary School the children in Year 3 will explore…
1. Football
In this unit, children will develop fundamental football skills such as dribbling, passing, and shooting. They will understand and apply basic rules of football, including fair play and teamwork, while improving their physical fitness through regular practice and participation in football activities. Additionally, children will learn to work collaboratively with peers, enhancing their communication and cooperation skills. The unit aims to build confidence and resilience by engaging in both competitive and non-competitive games. Furthermore, children will reflect on their performance and set personal goals for improvement. Key skills covered include dribbling, passing, shooting, defending, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Children will be able to:
· Continue to be able to communicate effectively.
· Volley the ball.
· Learn how to man mark and zonal mark.
· Continue to participate in team games.
· Play in competitive games.
· Become familiar with most of the key rules of the game such as free kick, corner, hand ball, foul, advantage and the card system.
2. Athletics
In this unit, children will develop essential athletic skills such as running, jumping, and throwing. They will understand and apply techniques to improve their performance in various athletic events, while enhancing their physical fitness through regular practice. Additionally, children will learn to set personal goals and work towards achieving them, fostering a sense of perseverance and determination. The unit aims to build confidence and resilience by participating in both individual and team activities. Key skills covered include sprinting, long-distance running, jumping (both long jump and high jump), throwing (such as javelin and shot put), teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Children will be able to:
· Can demonstrate good running posture.
· Can maintain good running technique whilst sprinting over obstacles.
· Throw an object safely, aiming to get it as far as possible.
· Attempt correct technique for jumps.
· Can throw with degree of accuracy.
3. Dance
In this unit, children will explore and develop fundamental dance skills, including rhythm, coordination, and expressive movement. They will understand and apply basic dance techniques and sequences, enhancing their physical fitness and creativity through regular practice. Additionally, children will learn to work collaboratively with peers, fostering communication and cooperation. The unit aims to build confidence and self-expression by participating in both individual and group dance activities. Key skills covered include rhythm and timing, body control and coordination, creative expression, teamwork, and performance skills.
Children will be able to:
· Respond to music by experimenting with changes of speed, direction, shape and size.
· Explore different ways to travel in more depth.
· Create linked shapes to their travel.
· Develop their skills by using change of speed, direction and sizes of movement.
· Put a story into a performance with clear entrances and exits.
· Show clear start and finish positions.
· Discuss the types of movements they have used.
4. Gymnastics
In this unit, children will develop fundamental gymnastics skills, including balance, coordination, and flexibility. They will understand and apply basic gymnastics techniques and routines, enhancing their physical fitness and body awareness through regular practice. Additionally, children will learn to work collaboratively with peers, fostering communication and cooperation. The unit aims to build confidence and resilience by participating in both individual and group gymnastics activities. Key skills covered include balance and stability, body control and coordination, flexibility, creative movement, teamwork, and performance skills.
Children will be able to:
· A performance that consists of at least 3 elements; a jump, a balance and a roll (in any combination).
· A balance that must be held for 3 seconds to constitute a successful element.
· Performances may be done to music and the routine pace will correlate with that.
· A group of performers will make their own routine considering the use of canon and unison in their performance.
· Performances will on occasion be displayed to the class and these will be critiqued and analysed.
· Analysis of performances will include positive attributes and improvements.
5. Rounders
In this unit, children will develop fundamental rounders skills, including batting, bowling, and fielding. They will understand and apply basic rules and strategies of the game, enhancing their physical fitness and teamwork through regular practice and participation. Additionally, children will learn to work collaboratively with peers, fostering communication and cooperation. The unit aims to build confidence and resilience by engaging in both competitive and non-competitive games. Key skills covered include batting techniques, accurate bowling, effective fielding, strategic thinking, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Children will be able to:
· The rules for an accurate throw to the batter.
· Practice batting technique.
· Key terms such as base and backstop.
· How to take the position of backstop.
· How to take the position on bases.
· How to keep score during a game.
6. Basketball
In this unit, children will develop fundamental basketball skills, including dribbling, passing, and shooting. They will understand and apply basic rules and strategies of the game, enhancing their physical fitness and teamwork through regular practice and participation. Additionally, children will learn to work collaboratively with peers, fostering communication and cooperation. The unit aims to build confidence and resilience by engaging in both competitive and non-competitive games. Key skills covered include dribbling techniques, accurate passing, effective shooting, defensive strategies, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Children will be able to:
· Control the ball when dribbling using shoulder and wrist movements.
· Keep the ball close when dribbling to enable a swift transfer into a pass.
· Learn how to chest pass, shoulder pass and bounce pass.
· Know how to get into shooting positions.
· Work together by creating space for teammates to receive the ball from them.
· Dribble around a defender.
Fitness
We as a whole school are implementing a fitness PE lesson once a week to encourage the children to maintain a healthy active lifestyle. Holding themselves accountable for their achievements and following their personal progress as they develop their fitness and cardiovascular health throughout their school life.
