Hello and a big welcome to the Y5 page! We all work very hard in Y5 and have lots of fun! This half term we are learning all about Crime and Punishment through time., reading the book Holes, exploring electricity and developing our place value and addition and subtraction skills. Keep checking back to find out what we have been up to.
Important information
PE days are Wednesday and Thursday(Swimming). Please ensure children bring to school a suitable PE/Swimming kit on these days.
Children have logins for TTRS, Spelling Shed and Accelerated Reader. They should access these every week as part of their homework.
Digging Holes
We went over to forest school to take on the role of Stanley Yelnats from Holes. To reform his character in Camp Green Lake he has to dig a hole (5ft deep and 5ft wide) every day in the boiling hot desert. We didn't have the heat of the desert but everyone found digging the holes hard work and we certainly didn't get any holes to the required size!! However, I think they had a lot more fun than Stanley!
In Music we have been learning 'Livin on a Prayer' by Bon Jovi. We looked at the structure of the song and learnt both the verses and the chorus. Alongside this we learnt the different note values and how to read music so that we could accompany the song. We had the choice of two Glockenspiel parts to learn, one was slightly easier than the other.
Electricity - Challenging Circuits
We have been exploring circuits in electricity. We made both an open and closed circuit and explained how they worked. We also investigated different components of the circuit to see if they made a difference to the outcome of the circuit.
We used switches to control our circuits.
After exploring circuits we used our knowledge to create Crime and Punishment quiz boards in DT.
Rally Coach in maths
We have been using some new Kagan learning in our classroom. Here the children have the concrete apparatus to develop their understanding of place value and addition. Both children have a set of calculations to complete. They take it in turns to complete the calculation explaining (coaching) to their partner as they do it. The partner needs to agree with the method and result. This worked really well and the children really enjoyed supporting each other.
In PE with have been developing skills in football.
Earth and Space
This half term in science we have been looking at Earth and Space.
We have explored the different planets and their relationship to the distance from the sun. We have also looked at how day and night is formed and the different phases of the moon.
In PE we have been working on core strength and fitness using a simple circuit set. The children have concentrated on improving their technique in each of the activities.
