Final Week of Year 1

 

Below is a grid of activities for the children to complete this week. The effort has been incredible during these difficult times and I am so proud of everything we have achieved. Enjoy the Summer and I look forward to seeing you and all the children next year in Year 2.

Complete partner practice for speedy green words, sounds, story green words and red words with your child now leading the session. They should be becoming very confident with these words now and will want to show you just how good they are!! Once you have completed these, your child can read the story to you! Encourage them to use lots of expression.

Challenge 1 - write out the number bonds of 10 and 20 starting with 0 + 10 = 10 or 0 + 20 = 20 all the way to 10 + 0 = 10 or 20 + 0 = 20 (to make it into a game you could time it and try to beat the score or have a race with an adult (it would be even better to complete this same activity for number bonds of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9)

Activity 2  - Today you are going to continue writing/creating your own story with your remaining 5 (or however many you decided to do) animals. Remember to follow the structure of Chicken's Bad Dream:

In order to prepare for this, today I want them to firstly talk about a special dream they have had and why it made them feel good. You could model this for them first by giving them your own example.

English Task 

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and after all your hard work this term I wanted to do something a little bit different today. Yesterday I was so excited to find out we were going to be continuing our journey together next year!! Therefore, your English task today is to make your very own 'Wellbeing Jar'. I want you to fill your jar with little pieces of paper with either; things you are looking forward to doing when the world is a safer place or different acts of kindness. Then everyday you can pick one out and hopefully make yourself and your family smile. Yesterday reminded me that we will be back together eventually and that truly is something to look forward to!!

This week there is just 1 challenge. I would like you to find out about and research a famous castle. The castle is your choice, it can be one that is local or one that is far away.

 

When you have found out lots of information I would like you to present your information. You can create a poster or an Information leaflet about it, you can use a computer programme such as PowerPoint or even one of the apps we have used so far this term. Get creative!!

Task: Today's task is to retell the story of Zog to someone (stay safe!!). There are lots of different ways to do this, you can pick some of the ideas from below or if you have your own ideas this is super too:

 

  • fold a piece of paper into boxes, draw pictures of the main events and use these to help you retell
  • make finger puppets of the main characters and use these to retell the story
  • draw a picture of the main characters, cut them out, attach them to sticks and use these to retell the story
  • write sentences from the story to help you when retelling (you could make little cards)

English Task -

Task: Imagine you were the snail in the story. Using the place you chose to visit in your letter yesterday, write an adventure story!! In your story I am looking for capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, 'and', 'I' and lots of super adjectives. In your story write about who you are going with, what you see on the way there and what happens when you get there. You can follow the structure of 'The Snail and the Whale' or you can decide to go on your adventure using a different animal (not the whale).

Challenge 1 - write out the number bonds of 10 starting with 0 + 10 = 10 all the way to 10 + 0 = 10 (to make it into a game you could time it and try to beat the score or have a race with an adult (it would be even better to complete this same activity for number bonds of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9)

Topic

 

Our topic just now is 'Australian Adventure.' We have studied the geographical side of this topic and learnt about where Australia is on a map, the population and many of its incredible landmarks. My Year 1 children absolutely love learning about the animals and we have therefore began learning about the animals and their habitats (science). When in school the children are given the opportunity to 'show me' what they have learnt through a variety of different resources. I spend about 10 minutes filling their minds with information and then they process and explain their understanding through play. They build with blocks, lego and junk modelling, they paint and draw, they write sentences, captions and labels, we go outside and they create using natural objects like sticks, leaves and mud. The children are incredible at showing me their learning and if possible I want this to continue. I will provide a variety of websites that will help to teach the children about habitats and food chains and I want them to show me with anything they have at home what they have learnt. I have also provided a booklet and if the children want to complete that, this is also ok!!
