Computing

Intent

At Chopwell Primary School, we want all our children to grow up feeling confident and excited about technology. Our aim is to give them the knowledge and curiosity to understand how computers work, how to stay safe online, and how digital skills can open doors in the future. We believe computing is for everyone, and we want our pupils to see themselves as problem-solvers, creators, and future coders. We are committed to preparing pupils for the future by embedding career awareness and encouraging them to communicate like real programmers, using precise technical language and structured thinking which they will need in a digital world.

Implementation

Computing is taught in a fun, hands-on way that builds on what children already know. We use the ‘Teach Computing’ Curriculum to make sure learning is clear, structured and progressive over time. Children get to explore coding, digital art, data, and more - often working collaboratively and learning through practical lessons. We incorporate ‘Project Evolve’ throughout the year to help children understand how to stay safe and make good choices online. We also focus on oracy, encouraging children to explain their thinking and use the right vocabulary - so they learn to “talk like a programmer” from an early age.

Impact

By the time they leave us, our pupils are confident, creative, and safe users of technology. They can code, solve problems, and explain their ideas clearly. They understand how computing fits into the world around them and how it could be part of their future. Most importantly, they enjoy computing and feel ready to take on new challenges in secondary school and beyond.
