At Chopwell Primary School, we believe that learning a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. Pupils develop communication and Literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning. Learning another language introduces an international dimension to pupils' learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others. Furthermore, it promotes British Values within school by encouraging understanding of diversity of other cultures and teaching tolerance and respect of these differences in the wider world.
Intent
At Chopwell Primary School, we want pupils to develop the confidence to communicate in French for practical purposes, using both written and spoken French. We aim to give pupils a love of languages, an awareness of other cultures and a foundation for language learning that enables them to apply their skills to learning further languages. It is our intention to ensure that by the end of our children’s primary education, they have acquired an understanding of both spoken and written French, confidence to speak in French with others and know how important other languages can be in their future.
Implementation
Our MFL curriculum is designed to develop not only our children’s language skills, but also their love of learning a language. It progressively develops language skills, allowing children to acquire new language then use and apply it in a range of different scenarios and topics. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. As their confidence and skill grows, children will begin to record their work through pictures, captions and sentences.
Impact
By the end of Key Stage 2, children will:
- Be able to engage in purposeful dialogue in a practical situation and to express an opinion. For example, to order food and drinks in a café or to follow directions.
- Make increasingly accurate attempts to read unfamiliar words, phrases and short texts.
- Speak and read aloud with confidence and accuracy in pronunciation.
- Demonstrate understanding of spoken language by listening and responding appropriately.
- Use a bilingual dictionary to support their learning.
- Be able to identify word classes in a sentence and apply grammatical rules they have learnt.
- Be able to construct short texts on familiar topics.
- Meet the end of Key Stage 2 expectations outlined in the National Curriculum for Languages.
