Reception Miss Banks

In Early Years, play is at the heart of everything we do — it’s where learning always happens!
Every day, the children explore, create and investigate, showing curiosity, independence and real determination. These photos capture our learning in action as the children use play to problem‑solve, collaborate and bring their own ideas to life.

Play isn’t just fun — it’s powerful learning, every single day

This half term, we explored the story After the Fall, inspired by Humpty Dumpty. The children sequenced the main events from the story and worked hard to add their own labels to each picture. They thought carefully about what happened first, next and last, and used their phonics knowledge brilliantly to write key words and phrases.

Our learning then took a scientific twist! We became real scientists by predicting what would happen if we dropped an egg from a height when it was wrapped in different materials. The children shared thoughtful ideas about which materials might keep the egg safe, and then tested their predictions with great excitement. There was lots of awe, wonder… and only a few cracks!

Inspired by this, the children headed to the craft area to design and make their own parachutes. They explored a range of materials, experimented with shapes and sizes, and tested which designs created the slowest, safest fall. It was wonderful to see so much problem‑solving, teamwork, and enthusiasm. A fantastic blend of storytelling, science and creativity!

We kicked off Anti-Bullying Week in style by wearing our brightest, wackiest odd socks to school — all to celebrate what makes each of us wonderfully unique! It was a joyful reminder that being different is something to be proud of.

Today we’ve been talking about what makes a good friend and how we can show kindness every day. The children worked together to sort pictures into things that show friendly behaviour and things that don’t — lots of thoughtful discussions and great ideas!

To finish off, we designed our very own pair of odd socks, bursting with colour and creativity. What a brilliant way to celebrate friendship, kindness and being ourselves!

This week, our classroom has been bursting with colour, culture and creativity as we explored the festival of Diwali! We learned all about how Diwali is celebrated and took part in some exciting activities to bring this to life.

The children tasted some delicious Indian food — there were lots of happy taste buds and curious faces!  We also dressed up in beautiful traditional Indian clothes!

Our creative skills shone as we designed our own mehndi hand patterns and rangoli art, using a mix of techniques and materials.

What a sparkling week we've had learning all about Bonfire Night! We discovered why people celebrate it and how traditions have changed over time. The children twirled and swirled their way through some fabulous firework dancing, using bright, colourful ribbons to mimic the bursts and bangs of fireworks in the sky!

We also got creative with our Bonfire art, exploring different materials to make fiery masterpieces full of texture and colour. Our classroom has never looked so dazzling!

We have enjoyed our Forest School adventure today. We were looking for signs of Autumn! We talked about what changes happen in the Autumn and what the leaves sounded like under our feet!

This Week in Drawing Club - Owl Babies

This week, our Reception children have been captivated by the story Owl Babies. Through this engaging tale, we explored new vocabulary and practised retelling the story using props to bring the characters to life.

We also discovered an old nest in our outdoor area, sparking curiosity and conversation about its materials and how it might have been built. Inspired by the story and their outdoor exploration, the children created their own owl baby stick puppets—combining creativity with storytelling!

We’ve had a fantastic first week in Reception! The children have settled in confidently and are already showing a great sense of belonging in their new classroom. They’ve enjoyed exploring the different areas indoors—from the role play corner to the construction area—and have quickly become familiar with the routines of the day.

One of the highlights has been lunchtime, where the children have learned to follow the routines beautifully, showing independence and good manners. It’s also been lovely to see new friendships blossoming as the children play and learn together. We’re so proud of how well they’ve started and are excited for all the adventures ahead!
